Giovanni Demetz was born on December 7th, 1960 in Ortisei / Val Gardena.
He started his artistic activity at the age of fourteen attending the Istituto d'Arte Cademia in Ortisei. In the following years he specialized in wood-carving attending at the same time the atelier of Master Heinrich Demetz and the Art School in Ortisei. In 1985, after graduating and receiving the qualification of "Maestro d'Arte", he opened his own atelier. The iconography of his wood-carvings and sacred art figures arise from the post-graduate training "La Bibbia in quattro anni" (The Holy Bible in four years) attended between 1998 and 2001 and held by Prof. Dr. Hansjörg Rigger and Pfr. Arthur Vinatzer.
Since 2002 he is member of the Unika artists group and exposes his works at the UNIKA - fair of sculpture in Val Gardena. Other wood-carvings have been exposed in Milan, Munich, Muggia, Anras, Dresden, Daetz-Centrum Lichtenstein and Karlsruhe. Since 2007 his works of art are exposed in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art "KunstArt" in Bolzano.

In the course of the last years his passion for painting and carving gave rise to new artistic creations, such as paintings integrated by real wood-carvings, which intensify their expressive capacity. The central theme is the representation of a character in all aspects of his life, that's to say with his fears, his desires and passions.
Even though he grew up in a small mountain village, the sea is frequently represented in his works. Demetz considers it a symbol of life passing by, while the sailing boat is a symbol for man at the mercy of the events of everyday life.
In 2009 he has become a member of the teaching staff of the Art Academy Geras (Austria).
